چکیده

In recent years, abnormal regulation of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) has been proposed as a key factor in the development of obesity-related metabolic disorders such as diabetes. Indeed, this signaling system which includes the cannabinoid type 1 and 2 receptors (CB1R and CB2R) and their endogenous lipid ligands, has been shown to influence feeding behavior, energy expenditure, as well as glucose and lipid metabolism. Importantly, blocking CB1R function has been demonstrated to counteract metabolic aberrations associated with obesity in various murine models and in humans. Here we provide an update on recent findings describing the role of the ECS in energy balance and metabolism, and explore how recent experimental and clinical studies have delivered new insights into the therapeutic potential of this physiological system as a means of treating obesity-induced metabolic disorders. © 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The Perfect Storm for Obesity

Obesity rates have risen steadily in the United States and around the world over the past century, with a marked escalation within the past two decades. Conventional wisdom within the medical community is that the burgeoning obesity epidemic is the product of poor nutrition and lack of exercise, but increasingly researchers are questioning whether those factors are wholly responsible. Emerging ...

Effect of whey protein supplementation on levels of endocannabinoids and some of metabolic risk factors in obese women on a weight-loss diet: a study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND Besides the effects of dietary long chain PUFA on circulating endocannabinoids concentrations, the impact of other nutrients on these system is not known and, whether changes in plasma endocannabinoids levels correlated with changes in body composition and biochemical metabolic risk factors in obese individuals, however, still remains to be characterized. METHODS We will conduct a ...

Endocannabinoids and liver disease. IV. Endocannabinoid involvement in obesity and hepatic steatosis.

Endocannabinoids are endogenous lipid mediators that interact with the same receptors as plant-derived cannabinoids to produce similar biological effects. The well-known appetitive effect of smoking marijuana has prompted inquiries into the possible role of endocannabinoids in the control of food intake and body weight. This brief review surveys recent evidence that endocannabinoids and their r...

Energy balance regulation by endocannabinoids at central and peripheral levels.

Dysregulation of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a universal and, perhaps, causative feature of obesity. Central nervous system (CNS) circuits that regulate food intake were initially believed to be the targets for dysregulation. However, it is increasingly evident that endocannabinoids affect food intake, energy expenditure and substrate metabolism by acting on peripheral sites. Cannabinoi...

MECHANISMS IN ENDOCRINOLOGY: Endocannabinoids and metabolism: past, present and future.

The endocannabinoid system (ECS), including cannabinoid type 1 and type 2 receptors (CB1R and CB2R), endogenous ligands called endocannabinoids and their related enzymatic machinery, is known to have a role in the regulation of energy balance. Past information generated on the ECS, mainly focused on the involvement of this system in the central nervous system regulation of food intake, while at...
